What is Lifelong Learning?Its the adult pattern of learning, if we have a problem, we find a solution, and see if it works. In jargon this is self-directed learning where the learner identifies an educational need, formulates a plan to address those needs, reflects on the learning achieved or affirmed, and identifies any further needs. How do we create a climate for life long learning?We keep asking questions (and get the answers). Whilst medical educators should remain flexible and agile in responding to different learners needs, the problem is that adult learning principles are seldom used to plan the education process. These principles are that adults seek solutions to problems (i.e. they only really want solutions to the problems they already have), they want active involvement in their learning (i.e. they want to be able to ask questions) and they want the best use of their time (i.e. they don't want their time wasted).
