Help Write the Book!

Questioning Primary Care or Frequently unasked questions in general practice

The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing.
If you can fake that, you've got it made.
Groucho Marx

This is a book that will be written on-line by readers in the next 2 years. We hope that you will send us your questions, answers, observations and anecdotes. All sensible contributions will be acknowledged. The copyright will be retained by Dr Terry Kemple

Nine times out of ten, in the arts as in life, there is actually no truth to be discovered; there is only error to be exposed.
H. L. Mencken

Outline of the book

The aim of our book is to entertain and inform each other about the essentials of general practice. It has been inspired by the time that medical students and GP registrars spend in their ‘training’ waiting for something to happen. It can either be read chapter by chapter, or each chapter used as a learning point. The entire book can be read in a couple of hours. By the end of the book you may understand the principles of primary care and manage patients problems better.

The current plan is that the first section relates to the 2002 European definition of general practice, the second section is Frequently unasked questions (and answers) about general practice and the final section will be references, appendices, glossaries and a self scoring quiz that will indicate what sort of doctor you are. This may change as the book takes shape.

The use of questions works on the assumption that learning starts with a question, and the most difficult part about learning is asking the right questions. Some of the questions are specific to primary care, some are more generic. The right questions will be gathered from the experience of as many people a possible.

Our book will evolve from your experience, conversations, notes, and reading. We apologise to anyone whose contribution is not acknowledged. Please contact us and we will correct errors or omissions. We want your contributions to describe the richness of life in primary care. You can contribute anything you want. If we cannot include your contribution in an edited book, there will be space on the website.

Each chapter is a draft. Some chapters are just started, some are almost finished. Some chapters may disappear and be replaced by more relevant chapters. This is work in progress, shaped by our readers and edited by us.

The suggested format for the book is short pithy chapters with

  • Declarative Title (to solve or answer a question)
  • Quotation
  • A story from life and/or research to illustrate the learning point.
  • Learning point

Declarative Titles include a variety of Frequently Unasked questions which we will be attempting to answer over the next couple of years

The links on the left show the chapters that are being written, the Frequently Unasked Questions (add link to I1) are some of the questions that we want to answer.
