MRCGP Overview
It is with great
trepidation this summary of the MRCGP is written as by the time of going to
press it will probably have changed. It is essential that you obtain
from the Examination
Department at the College the very latest details of the MRCGP.
There are four parts to the examination, which is now in modular form. In
addition, you need to have completed Resuscitation BLS (which the VTS
arrange), which needs to be submitted with the application for the
Consulting Skills Module of the examination. The four modules are as
follows:
i.
Paper One
This is held in May and
October and is the morning of a whole day examination. There are 12 or more
questions in 3 ½ hours mostly in short note format. This then goes on to
Paper Two in the afternoon.

ii.
Paper Two
This is an MCQ and
extended matching questions during the afternoon lasting 3 hours.
** It is essential when you apply for the
examination that you choose the Centre in which to take these
papers. It is possible to take them in Bristol and if you do not put that
you want to take them in Bristol you will be sent to London by default.
iii.
Consulting Skills
This can be done in two
ways, either with a video or a simulated surgery, which happens in London in
June and December of each year. Most people take this video option as this
is submitted at the same time as the written examination. If you wish to
have a simulated surgery you need to submit evidence why you are unable to
video.
