Practice Profile: We are a new, innovative and enthusiastic
practice established in April 2000 to serve a population with high social
and health needs. The practice is a PMS Plus Pilot and all staff, including
the GPs, are employed by North Somerset Primary Care Trust. The practice
population is predominantly young (30% aged < 16yrs) and there are high
rates of teenage pregnancy, mental illness and drug misuse. As a team we run
the usual clinics (heart disease, asthma, diabetes) but also a drop-in
clinic for teenagers, minor illness clinics and shared-care clinics for drug
misusers.
We work as a truly democratic primary care team, with highly skilled
nursing and administrative staff, and we all meet together regularly to
review and improve the care we provide. In 2002 the team won a national
award for its work in reducing health inequalities. The team also looks
after itself through an appraisal system, annual away-days and social
events.
We have been teaching medical students for 2 years. They come on two week
attachments and we always get good feedback from them. Dr Seviour is an
experienced trainer. We now look forward to registrars joining us to learn
about the challenges and rewards of General Practice within a dedicated and
supportive team.
In 2004 the practice will move into purpose built accommodation within a
new Healthy Living Centre, where it will continue its partnership working.
