MONEY MATTERS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

All GPs and Registrars are regulated by a dearly loved document called “The Red Book” a copy of which will be available within your practice. This Government speak document provides the answers to all of your queries but not in a very user-friendly format. What follows, I hope is a remedy.  Under the new GMS Contract these regulations may change.

Sick leave
Removal expenses
Rent reimbursement
Telephone
Maternity Leave
Defence organisation fees
Terms of employment
Travel expenses

(Contact Jan Coggins at The Primary Care Support Agency, Kings square House, King Square, Bristol, BS2 8EE or 0117 - 9002462  if you need more information.)

SICK LEAVE

  1. Up to two weeks sickness: normal pay: no extension of training period.

  2. More than two weeks sickness: normal salary for up to three months but no car allowance (or training allowance to trainer!).  Training period may have to be extended.

  3. After three months: salary is at the discretion of the Secretary of State.

  4. It is up to your trainer to tell The Primary Care Support Agency if you are off sick.

  5. You are strongly advised to register with a GP - but not with your training practice.

REMOVAL EXPENSES

If you have to move house when you become a GP registrar, you may get payment of some expenses.  The rules are the same as for hospital doctors but the payment is made by The Primary Care Support Agency.

RENT REIMBURSEMENT

If you have to start paying rent on a property near your training practice before you start your traineeship and if you are still paying rent on an existing property, The Primary Care Support Agency may help with the ‘continuing commitment allowance’.  If the rent for your new property exceeds the rent for your previous accommodation, you may be able to claim excess rent allowance from The Primary Care Support Agency.

If you are required by your training Partnership to stay in the area of the Practice, The Primary Care Support Agency may reimburse any rent payable

TELEPHONE

You may be reimbursed for the following costs:-

  1. The installation cost of a telephone at your home

  2. Your telephone rental

  3. The cost of installing an extension in your bedroom if you are on call from home.

MATERNITY LEAVE

Payments for maternity leave depend on:

  1.  Being employed continuously by the NHS for the previous 12 months when you reach 29 weeks.  (But a gap of up to 3 months is disregarded).

  2.  Being employed by the trainer at the start of the 29th week.

  3.  Giving a minimum of 21 days of your intention to take maternity leave.

  4.  Giving a certificate to the trainer of expected date of delivery.

DEFENCE ORGANISATION FEES

A proportion of Professional Defence Organisation Fees can actually be reimbursed by The Primary Care Support Agency via your practice.
