Our aim is to provide a high standard of medical care in a friendly and professional manner.

We operate from a purposely built surgery in 1990s and the area we serve encompasses a wide variety of social classes and problems. Sea Mills served originally as a Roman port for the area and the estate was first built at the end of the First World War although in those days one did not walk on the grass!

This practice was first set up in 1928 with surgeries between 5pm – 6pm. What did they do the rest of the time? It has been a “family practice” for a long time in that the senior partner’s father was a partner for 40 years in the area. We have a relatively high number of elderly patients living at home and quite a high proportion of single parent families. Sea Mills is in the poorest third of the city but we do cover a more affluent area as well. We have 6,400 patients and a relatively stable population. So we have the whole spectrum of general practice - “Variety is the spice of life”.

The Practice Partners

Dr. Hugh S. Silvey – Senior partner (in name only). Qualified in Bristol 1973 and still aspires to play a good round of golf. In the surgery he supervises the finance, manages our asthma clinic, tells dreadful jokes and keeps us all sane (most of the time!).

Dr. Mervyn McGowan – he has been here since 1985. He qualified in Belfast 1978, is the trainer in the practice and ran the London marathon April 2002 (Stress relieving exercise!). He “runs” the diabetic clinic and has been known to play the clarsach especially on Christmas Eve.

Dr Clare Andersson – Another Bristol graduate (1984) she is a ¾ time partner to enable her to achieve a balance between being a wife, mum to 2 young boys and a partner. She runs the baby clinic and CHD clinic.

Dr Saffron Reavely – She joined us 2001 as a ½ time partner and loves horses! She has even been known to ride up to the surgery! She has one little girl at home and also is clinical assistant in dermatology (& has a post graduate dermatology diploma).

Dr Kath Waters – She is our PMS doctor for 4 sessions a week as well as doing maternity locums, holiday locums etc. She was a registrar here and has stayed on (so we mustn’t be that bad!). She has a particular interest in Care of the Elderly.

Practice Manager.

Mrs. Jean Allchorne is the real key as to why our practice works so well. If you do not know anything ask Jean and if she doesn’t know she will know someone who does!

Practice Nurses

Rosemary Hill and Mary Michaels have been here for years and manage our diabetics, asthmatics, leg ulcers and us! We have appointed Anne and Barbara in 2002 to increase our nursing hours.

Practice Staff

We have a superb bunch of very loyal staff who work really hard for us.

We are “paper light” and have access to the “net” from our desk tops. We use EMIS and there are PCs in all the surgeries, reception, treatment room, library etc. All our notes are summarised and computerised.

We organise a weekly clinical meeting on a Friday lunch time with the health visitor, district nurses mainly where we communicate, commiserate and support each other. We have recently appointed a nurse to try and address the unmet needs of our elderly population and to help us achieve the NSF targets for the elderly.

Wednesday morning at 8am – 9am (coffee supplied) is when our practice business meeting occurs and we do have critical event meetings then as well as the nurses having a meeting with us.

We are part of the local Co-op of GPs (which works very well) who operate out of Southmead Hospital.

We have medical students in the practice although less of them since our registrars arrived. We have all the usual facilities and we are still enthusiastic about having registrars. Kath Waters, Caroline Verlinde and Helen Kershaw have been our recruits so far and it has really been a mutually rewarding experience (ask them if you want). Kath passed her MRCGP with merit and Caroline has passed her Belgian equivalent in the top 10 in her region. Helen was returning to general practice after many years in paediatric oncology. We expect our registrars to keep us on our toes, teach us some new things and be normal with a sense of humour.
